Dear Paleonet,

The NSF-sponsored iSamples research coordination network (RCN) is committed
to advancing the sharing of physical samples and data on samples
by engaging a broad array of Earth and Space Science fields and
disciplines, along with museums, data repositories, and others. To develop
a clear baseline understanding of current practice and views, iSamples has
developed a stakeholder survey that we hope you will distribute to your
members (or take yourself). Participation is voluntary and confidential --
no individual identifying information will be reported.

If you want to review the survey, it can be taken at the following URL and
your responses will be included in the data:

http://maps.waymarksystems.org/s3/iSamples-Stakeholder-Survey-2014-consent

If you just want to see what questions are being asked without actually
taking the survey, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld (joel at waymarksystems.org) or
Mike Haberman (mike at waymarksystems.org) can arrange for your doing so
without the results being recorded.

If you are interested in customized results from just the members of your
association, they can also establish a unique URL so that the responses
from your list-serve can be compared to the overall responses. Regardless
of whether you want the custom feedback, the overall results can be shared
at a future meeting of your association and through other channels as
appropriate.

If you are willing to do so, you can use this same language in the
following way:

The NSF-sponsored iSamples research coordination network (RCN) is committed
to advancing the sharing of physical geoscience samples and data on samples
by engaging a broad array of geoscience fields and disciplines, along with
museums, data repositories, and others. To develop a clear baseline
understanding of current practice and views, iSamples has developed a
stakeholder survey that we hope you will distribute to your members.
Participation is voluntary and confidential -- no individual identifying
information will be reported.

If you are interested in participating in this survey, you can do so
through the following link: (this can be the general URL above or a custom
link)

Note that this survey is part of the larger NSF EarthCube initiative, which
has been collecting general information on data sharing in the geoscience
and which will continue to do so in 2015 so that the development of the
supporting cyberinfrastructure for the geosciences is driven by data from
geoscientists and other key stakeholders.

As indicated, this survey is part of a broader data collection process
associated with the NSF EarthCube initiative. Later in January there will
be a general EarthCube stakeholder alignment survey and your distribution
of that will be requested as well.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Kerstin Lehnert
