The University of Missouri (MU) Department of Geological Sciences seeks
applicants for a Senior Research Specialist to manage and operate electron
and x-ray microbeam instrumentation at the newly established MizzoµX Core
Facility for x-ray microanalysis. This facility will house two newly
acquired instruments – a Zeiss Sigma 500 FE-SEM with dual EDS and microXRF
capabilities, and a Zeiss Versa 510 microCT.

Required application materials: All applicants must submit (1) a letter of
interest, including a statement of relevant instrumentation experience and a
brief overview of independent research interests (not to exceed 3 pages);
(2) a current CV; and (3) two letters of reference.


Purpose: The purpose of this position is to serve as the primary lab manager
for the newly established MizzoµX Core Facility for X-ray microanalysis,
enabling and assisting researchers in the MU Department of Geological
Sciences, the MU System (including campuses at Rolla, Kansas City, and St.
Louis), and the broader Midwest region to collect high-quality, high-impact
data across a broad range of scientific inquiry. 


Essential functions will include: Daily instrument operation and
maintenance; reporting/bookkeeping of instrument use and assisting in
management of laboratory accounts; training of new and continuing users; and
providing sample preparation and data collection for clients. 


Additional duties may include: Developing novel analytical protocols;
assisting with training workshops, short courses, and regular semester-long
courses; planning for improvements of the lab and seeking funding to support
growth of lab capabilities; and development of independent research.


Required qualifications: MS in geosciences, chemistry, materials science, or
related fields required; PhD preferred. Significant experience in electron
and/or X-ray microbeam methods required. Applicants should have an
established record of reliability, self-motivation and independence,
organization skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills and the
ability to work with researchers from a broad range of disciplines, and
possess both written and oral communication skills. 


Preferred Qualifications: Experience with applications of electron
microscopy, EDS, XRF, and/or microCT to geological materials. Experience
with segmentation and 3D volume-viewing software a plus.
