Dr. Lanny H. Fisk of Grass Valley, California, passed away unexpectedly on July 19, 2018, at the age of 74. Lanny was a respected paleobotanist, mitigation paleontologist, and Registered Professional Geologist in the State of California. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a Medical Specialist at the Pentagon from 1967-1969. Following his honorable discharge, he completed a Bachelors degree at Andrews University in 1971. Lanny earned a Ph.D. in biology with an emphasis in paleontology from Loma Linda University in 1976 and pursued post-doctoral studies in Petroleum Geology at Michigan State University. He then taught at Walla Walla College in Washington state. Over the years he also taught at Loma Linda University and American River College. In 1982, Lanny established PaleoResource Consultants, a paleontological consulting firm that he ran as CEO up until his passing. In 1993 he was appointed by the Governor of Oregon to serve on the board of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, which he served on until 1998. Lifelong research took Lanny around the world. However, his favorite project took place at Yellowstone National Park where he supervised graduate students working on its petrified forests. During the course of his career, Lanny published many per reviewed articles and countless mitigation reports. Beginning in 2012, Lanny and a group of colleagues began to develop and spearhead an effort to establish best practices for the mitigation paleontology industry, a cause that Lanny was extremely passionate about. Throughout his life, Lanny was a lecturer, teacher and mentor to many geologists and paleontologists. He was an energetic and dedicated scientist and a devoted friend to many people - a practical joker with a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. He leaves behind his 3 children Daniel, Michael and Dessa, along with his sisters Paula and Susan. Lanny will be missed!
