Dear Tricia,

Your message on Paleonet about the GSA topical session you are
organizing in memory of Richard "Alex" Alexander brought me up short.

Sometime last winter, I saw a notice or message referring to the
death of Richard Alexander. I assumed it to refer to another Richard
Alexander, never thinking of Alex.

I knew Alex quite well, although we had not been in contact for
a few years. He came here to speak to our students, a good many
years ago/. Subsequently, I went up to Rider College. If I remember
correctly, I stayed at his house at that time. More recently, we
corresponded quite a bit about manuscripts, particularly in
conjunction with a couple of papers for Historical Biology.

What happened to Alex? I searched on Google and found nothing.

As you know, I keep track of the deaths of PS members and former
members, so we can remember them at out annual meeting. Alex has not
been a PS member for several years; his name does not appeal in the
2000 directory. I would guess that he was formerly a member. Do you
know for sure.

I am sad to learn, belatedly, of Alex's death. He was a good scientist.

      Warm regards, Roger
