Dear paleonetters:
This questions dos not fit stratight into paleontology, although it might be of interest for some people.
I am preparing a field trip to the Spanish Pyrenees this summer, and in reading the literature about the turbidites of the Hecho Group in the Jaca basin, I found that there descriptions of two "megas". Rupke (1976) describes nine megabeds, consisting of two units each (a lower calcarenite, and an upper marlstone), of a maximum thickness of 55 meters. Several other authors describe megaturbidites, interestingly nine of them too, but of greater thickness (up to 200 m) and consisting of four subunits, including a lower unit of great blocks of of carbonates, a breccia, and two more units above. The pictures of both megabeds and megaturbidites do not show the same features, but it seems that both can be traceable tens or kilometers and are mappeable using aerial pictures.
I am confused. Are they describing the same "megas"? Since the paleonet community is quite big, I wonder if anyone could orient me on this or redirect this email to someone knowledgeable.
