Hi, All,
I have a research opportunity for an undergraduate student this
summer, examining the impact of the Macondo/DWH spill on the
Louisiana/Mississippi marsh environment. Please see below for
details. I would appreciate it if you could distribute this to
undergraduates you might teach who would benefit from this opportunity.

Research Experience for an Undergraduate Student (NSF/REU)
For 12 weeks this summer, my lab is offering a stipend to an
undergraduate geology, biology, marine science or environmental
science student to execute a research project on the impact of the
Deepwater Horizon/Macondo well oil spill.
The student will test the impact oil on the living population of
benthic foraminifera at a heavily oiled marsh in Louisiana. The
student will take replicate samples from a site polluted for a year
and, after making a census of the live foraminifers in the samples,
test if the population is altered compared to marsh populations that
are oil free or lightly oiled by a single oiling event. The results
will cap a year-long NSF-RAPID project that examined the effects of
oil on benthic foraminifers, the macrofauna, and bioturbation in
several marshes in the Louisiana/Mississippi area.
The stipend is $400/wk with an additional $125 to offset living
expenses. The laboratory is located in the USM Department of Marine
Science, which is housed at the NASA Stennis Space Center near Bay
St. Louis, Ms. and about 50 minutes from New Orleans, La.
To apply, please send as an e-mail attachment (1) a CV including your
contact information (phone, e-mail address, mailing address), (2)
e-mail and phone contact for three references who are familiar with
your academic abilities, and (3) a statement explaining your interest
in the project. Please send to charlotte.brunner at usm.edu.
