Course Description

This short course covers the micropalaeontology, biostratigraphy and
paleobathymetry of the petroleum basins of offshore eastern Canada (Grand
Banks, Labrador Shelf), NW Greenland, and Norway (incl. Barents Sea). It is
designed to provide insight into the industrial utility of Mesozoic and
Cenozoic shelly microfossil types and assemblages.

The aim is to provide the participant with biostratigraphic,
paleobathymetric and paleoceanographic models with examples of their
economic applications. Attention is given to Epistominids and higher
latitude planktonic foraminifera, together with deeper water agglutinated
foraminiferal assemblages (DWAF). A framework will be provided for their
taxonomy, biozonations and deep water paleoecological models.

This intensive course is intended for professionals and advanced students in
applied micropalaeontology.

Course Structure

The course follows 2 days on Grand Banks, (+ conjugate Portugal), Orphan
Basin and Labrador Margin (+ conjugate W.Greenland), 1 day on the
classification and paleoecology of agglutinated foraminifera, and 2 days on
North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea. Time Scale Creator software will
also be dealt with to create detailed biostratigraphic range and event
charts. Participants do extensive microscope sessions to study key
foraminiferal taxa, including zonal events and assemblages, with emphasis on
the deep water agglutinants and planktonics in higher latitudes.

Teaching Format

The course consists of morning lectures and afternoon microscope lab
sessions to provide the opportunity for participants to learn genera and
species, and view Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene shelly microfossil
assemblages from selected sites. Course materials include a large number of
reprints of classic and regional micropaleo studies, distributed on memory
stick.

Datapacks of microfossil events will be uploaded in TimeScaleCreator Pro for
creation of attractive zonal schemes.

Instructor Profile: Felix M. Gradstein

Professor Felix M. Gradstein, former Chair of the International Commission
of Stratigraphy (ICS), is best known for his ongoing contributions to the
development and refinement of the Geologic Time Scale. Recent major
publications include "A Geologic Time Scale 2004" (Gradstein et al., 2004)
and "Atlas of Paleogene Cosmopolitan Deep-Water Agglutinated Foraminifera"
(Kaminski & Gradstein, 2005). Felix has extensive knowledge of the geology
and micropaleontology of the high-latitude North Atlantic through his career
at the Geological Survey of Canada and later at Saga Petroleum in Norway.
His academic career includes shipboard scientific involvement on various
deep sea drilling expeditions. Felix currently holds a professorial position
at the University of Oslo, Norway.

Previous courses

This short course began in 2009 at Chevron in Houston, Texas. It was so
successful that Felix was invited to teach it at PDVSA in Puerto La Cruz,
Venezuela and at the Geological Survey of Denmark & Greenland in Copenhagen,
Denmark. The course was specifically designed with foraminiferal
biostratigraphers in mind to be as hands-on microscope based as possible.
Nevertheless, a number of other microfossil group specialists found the
lectures highly informative.
