Fossil image database of foraminifera creates online plates as desired

Dear Reader,

The Foraminifera.eu Project has now integrated 5000 illustrations to its
free accessible database. The basic concept is to let the user create
desired plates by choices from 20 criteria.
The criteria cover classification, geological time, locality and others
with each criteria having a fixed set of possible values. Each
illustration carries a set of values, which makes the collection
searchable.

An Example: A query on the testform "triserial" results within seconds
in a plate with 263 illustrations. By adding order "Buliminda" the
plate is narrowed down to 220, by then adding period "Neogene" to 69 and
area "Pannonian Basin" to 17 illustrations. Make your own try at
http://www.foraminifera.eu/querydb.php . Start with a search on one
criteria and narrow it down from the resulting plates.

We think that this concept of plates as desired is unique and useful. It
might be applied to other fossil image databases, though a lot of work
needs to be done in defining the criteria, its values and to get and add
the information for each image. Please tell us what you think about it
and which improvements should be made.

To enlarge the power of this concept we are looking permanently for
illustrations of foraminifera to be integrated or samples to be
processed. Please consider your contribution.

The Foraminifera.eu Project is strictly non-commercial, run by amateurs
supported by scientists, institutions and publishers. It is meant to
foster the interest in foraminifera, sharing our enthusiasm about
foraminifera and what they tell us about Earth history. Find more
