Dan –

Thank you for touching base with us. We are getting a better handle on the
collection from BLM but have run into a few mysteries within our own fossil
collection. Do you happen to know of anyone who is an expert or who is
studying Ordovician cephalopods? The reason I ask is because we are trying
to determine if the fossil of the *Probillingsites kessleri* we have in
our collection is in fact a true holotype and whether the other specimens
that were given the same object id number and are similar in appearance are
from the same species. Unfortunately, our old museum records were not very
detailed or very helpful. We have tried to reach out to Walter C. Sweet,
who identified the fossil as being a *Probillingsites kessleri* in his
study “Cephalopods From The Fremont Formation of Central Colorado”
published in the *Journal of Paleontology*, Vol. 29, No. 1 (Jan. 1955) pgs.
71 – 82. We have not received a response back. We are not even sure of his
state of health. We would really like to identify these fossils if we can.
Please share this email and let us know if you know of anyone that would be
interested in looking at them for us.

Thank you so much of your interest and your assistance.

Merry Christmas!

Sincerely,

Lisa Studts | Museum Director
