PRI is pleased to announce publication of the fourth in its series of teacher-development tools, The Teacher-Friendly Guide(tm) to the Earth Science of the Northwest Central US, edited by Mark D. Lucas, Robert M. Ross, and Andrielle N. Swaby (PRI Publications, October 2015, ISBN 978-0-87710-511-4, 450 pp, softcover, $35.00 retail).
The Teacher-Friendly Guides(tm) to Earth Science is a growing series written for educators as curriculum resources and supplements. These products of PRI's active teacher development program, and available as interactive websites<http://geology.teacherfriendlyguide.org/> and in softcover, are designed to provide educators with the background necessary to introduce scientific topics using familiar organisms and landscapes. With a newfound understanding of local Earth science, students can open the door to inquiry by applying learned scientific concepts and principles to situations outside the classroom.
This volume builds upon the success of "The TFG to Geology of the Northeastern US<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/publications/pubdetails.php?pubID=46&back=catID%3D51%26page%3D2%26buy%3D2>" (2000) and the "Southeastern US<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/publications/pubdetails.php?pubID=5749&back=catID%3D51%26page%3D2%26buy%3D2>" (2003), both currently out of print, but under revision this fall for second editions. Guides to the West<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/publications/pubdetails.php?pubID=5799&back=authorlast%3D%26subject%3Dteacher-friendly%26year%3D%26volume%3D%26isbn%3D%26search%3D1%26catID%3D51> (including Alaska and Hawai'i), South Central<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/publications/pubdetails.php?pubID=5801&back=authorlast%3D%26subject%3Dteacher-friendly%26year%3D%26volume%3D%26isbn%3D%26search%3D1%26catID%3D51>, and Midwest<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/publications/pubdetails.php?pubID=5797&back=authorlast%3D%26subject%3Dteacher-friendly%26year%3D%26volume%3D%26isbn%3D%26search%3D1%26catID%3D51> are also available. Also coming within the next few months is a Guide to the Southwest.
Praise for the Teacher-Friendly Guides(tm) to Earth Science:
"What a marvelous teaching tool ... I have been teaching for 25 years, 10 of them in Earth Science, and I have not previously seen a better organized, easier to use resource." -Suni Jordan, University of San Diego High School
"The text is readable yet detailed, with a minimum of technical terminology ... Considering the low cost and the wealth of easily accessed material and information, I would highly recommend The Teacher-Friendly Guide to the Geology of the Northeastern US for all geoscience educators in the area." -Keith A. McKain, National Association of Geology Teachers
"...an excellent source of good, clear information for teachers. If you haven't seen this yet, you are missing out." -Bernadette Tomaselli, Science Teacher, New York
Teacher-Friendly Guides(tm) to other subjects<http://www.museumoftheearth.org/outreach.php?page=teacherprofdev/Teach_Guides> are also available. Watch for our upcoming TFG to Climate Change in 2015.
