SSP 4.1 Biomineralisation in the fossil record

Biomineralisation was a key evolutionary innovation in the history of life on Earth. Carbonate, silicate, phosphate and other minerals forming within living tissues produce shells, bones, teeth and other hard parts which are readily preserved over geological timescales. This session will focus on the fossil record of biomineralisation, including biominerals as archives for palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic information. We invite submissions considering the structure, biological controls, inorganic, organic and isotope geochemistry of biomineralisation in fossils and modern analogues from any phylum.
Confirmed keynote speakers include Professor Maggie Cusack, University of Glasgow and Dr Erika Greisshaber-Schmahl, Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich.
