Are you sure they are not stellate plant trichomes? : http://morgellonswatch.com/2007/06/12/occams-garden/
- Perhaps more likely if they are from lacustrine strata.

The object is very small. If it is a hexactinellid sponge, one might expect there to be larger spicules in the deposit as well. Is radiolarian a possibility? Are there any other specimens?
