In conjunction with this year's Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) meeting, the University of Calgary will be hosting a PaleoArt exhibit as part of this year’s SVP conference. In fact, there will be two separate exhibits:

  1. 1) Exhibit at the Telus Convention Centre during the SVP conference (August 23-26th, 2017)

2) Exhibit at the University of Calgary (September 12 – 24th, 2017)

The University of Calgary PaleoArt exhibit will be listed as part of the program for the annual Beakerhead Festival - an annual Calgary festival that celebrates the intersection of art, design, science, and engineering (www.beakerhead.com)<http://www.beakerhead.com)>. Funding for these exhibits has been provided by the University of Calgary and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Call for Submissions:

We are seeking artistic works for both exhibits. Pieces can be exhibited at just one of the exhibits (during SVP; post-SVP at UCalgary) or at both exhibits. Any artist active in the PaleoArt community is welcome to submit a piece. Scientific illustrations and art are both acceptable; if it can be submitted for an SVP Lanzendorf Paleoart Prize, it is suitable for these exhibits! There are some restrictions on the formats of art that we can accept for the two venues, owing to space limitations.

SVP Exhibit @ Telus Convention Centre:
Works will be displayed in the atrium, which is also serving as the exhibitor’s hall and poster area this year. The space is adjacent to where the talks are taking place and should provide excellent visibility.

Due to space limitations and the fact that works will be hung on poster boards, we can only accept:

· 2D art (no sculptures)

· Maximum size of 110 cm tall x 230 cm wide

· Works with light frames (because the poster boards cannot hold heavy frames). Digital works printed on foam core, presentation board or similar substrates are suitable.

· A maximum of ONE submission per artist

Artwork must arrive ready to hang and will need to be hung the day before the conference on Tuesday August 22nd at the same time that the exhibitors are setting up their merchandise. Artwork will be removed Saturday evening after the poster session ends.

Exhibit @ The University of Calgary:
This exhibition will take place in a gallery on the University of Calgary campus. The exhibition will open with a reception on September 12th (all artists are welcome to attend). The exhibition has been timed to overlap with the Calgary’s Beakerhead Festival (Sept 13-17th) and with the University of Calgary’s Alumni Weekend (Sept 22 – 24th). Because of those two events, we anticipate good visibility and exposure for this exhibition.

In addition to works by professional paleoartists, this exhibition will include work by University of Calgary students created during a summer session course “Drawing in the Biological Sciences – PaleoArt” (funded by the same grants as the exhibitions).

For this exhibition, we can accept:

· Both 2D and 3D art.

· Frames or mounting of any kind (no weight restrictions). Works must arrive ready to exhibit.

· A maximum of TWO submissions per artist

Additional Information:

Insurance: Works at both exhibitions will be considered officially “on loan” to the University of Calgary so can be covered by the University’s Fine Arts Insurance Policy. Details on the University of Calgary Fine Arts policy can be found here: https://www.ucalgary.ca/riskmgmt/insuranceclaims/fine-arts-insurance

Shipping: Packing and shipping is the artists’ responsibility. If you are shipping a work, please contact the organizers to make arrangements. For works that need to be shipped back at the end of the exhibit, pre-paid courier is the preferred method.

Storage: We can provide secure storage for works of art that need to be shipped ahead of time. They will be kept in a secure storage room at the University of Calgary along with items for the SVP Auction. If works of art are being exhibited at both Telus CC and the University of Calgary, we will provide local transportation from one venue to the other and storage in between exhibits (Aug 27 – Sept 11).

Security: At Telus Convention Centre, the works will be displayed in the central atrium outside the podium presentation rooms and adjacent to the exhibits, to maximize visibility. The atrium is open from 8:30 – 6:30pm. Outside of these hours it is locked.

At the University of Calgary, the building hours are 8:30-4:30, and outside of these hours the building is locked. Security guards will be present in the building during high traffic times (during the Beakerhead Festival and on weekends). Student volunteers will be present in the exhibit at all times that it is open to answer questions and monitor the exhibit.

Ownership and Advertising: Works may be submitted by the artist or by the owner of the work (with the artist’s permission). Works that have previously been exhibited elsewhere are welcome, as are works that are for sale.

Promotion: We are actively seeking digital copyright for paleoart images that can be used to promote the UCalgary exhibition to the public. If you are willing to have your work featured in advertising, please contact the organizers. Note that these need not be the same pieces that are submitted for the exhibits themselves.

To Submit:

Please send an email to the addresses below including a digital image of the work and explicitly stating:

1) The title of the work

2) The format of the work (painting, print, digital print, sculpture, etc.)

3) Which exhibition (SVP, UCalgary, both)

4) A short description of the work, date, and medium. Descriptions should be maximum 200 words. We reserve the right to edit descriptions for the labels used in the exhibition.

5) The size of the work

6) How it is framed/mounted

7) The value (for insurance purposes)

8) How/when the work will be arriving in Calgary (local, coming with the artist to SVP, being shipped).

We are requesting preliminary submissions and expressions of interest by July 15th, 2017 so that we can begin planning. Final submissions must be received by August 4th 2017. We will review all submissions and send acceptance notices by August 10th (SVP exhibition) and August 20th (U of C exhibition) at the latest. Early submissions are encouraged!
