Dear Colleagues,
Registration for the 2018 Geological Society of America annual meeting is
underway. As you prepare your abstracts, please consider our session: T20.
Rapid Fire Research: Communicating the Connections between Geoscience and
Society for the Modern Attention Span (or "In Five Minutes or Less").
In this session, our focus will be on the value geoscience brings to
society and the importance of clear, concise communication. For this
"lightning" session, composed of blocks of three to five consecutive *5-minute
talks* followed by conversational Q&A, we invite speakers from all branches
of geoscience to speak on their work with a special focus on its relevance
to the public, the environment, policymakers, or society writ-large. We
challenge you to boil down your geoscience knowledge to its most important
and fundamental elements with the goal of engaging your audience and
creating a more dynamic and welcoming presentation environment. To put it
simply, viewers of this session should be able to quickly and easily answer
the "So what?" for each talk they observe.
Talks within the session will be organized around common themes (e.g.,
economic geology; paleontology) to create opportunity for in depth
conversation of societal applications related to subtopics.
Research that is still in progress, first-time speakers, and students at
all levels are all welcome and encouraged. Abstract submissions are due
August 14th.
If you are interested in submitting an abstract, please visit the meeting
website at https://community.geosociety.org/gsa2018/home.
