Paleontological Research Institution Launches Virtual Toolkit
to Learn about the Earth and its 4.5-billion-year History
ITHACA, NY- The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) is pleased to announce the launch of Earth at Home(tm), a free online toolkit for learning about Earth and its 4.5-billion-year history.
Earth at Home(tm), which launched on August 24, is rich with free interactive content about Earth and its life, with a focus on geology, paleontology, climate, and the connections of Earth's different systems. The major components of this platform include regionally-based guides to Earth science, an online, open-access Earth science textbook, and virtual fieldwork experiences that will bring Earth science to the online classroom. Earth at Home(tm) aims to teach everyone about the natural environment where they live. The website, while accessible to all learners, will especially help educators create robust Earth science lesson plans and offer free learning resources for their students to utilize. The website will continue to grow over the next several years as new content is added to the site.
The Earth at Home(tm) project is being led by PRI Director of Science Communication Dr. Jonathan Hendricks who shared "PRI has been producing high-quality educational materials related to Earth science for over 20 years. Earth at Home(tm) is an effort to integrate and update many of these resources and make them freely available online." He added "the overarching goal of the project is to help people become more aware of the world around them."
Finding innovative ways to support the education community has become a considerable focus of PRI since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earth at Home(tm), is intended to aid educators as many are forced to adapt to the changes the pandemic has presented in education. These free resources will help high school educators, college faculty, and any other teachers meet the challenges associated with these sudden changes.
