PhD Position Cluster of Excellence: The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Un-
charted Interface

The MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University
of Bremen is offering (under the condition of the grant by the funding
party and of job release)

one PhD position (f/m/d) in paleoceanography for 3 years German federal
salary group 13 TV-L (66,66 %)

The earliest starting date is 1 July 2021.

The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic
Fixed-Term Contract, §2 (1) Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz –
WissZeitVG. Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment
if they still have the respective qualification periods available in
accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.

The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted
Interface” is part of the Research Faculty MARUM at the University of
Bremen. Within the project Ocean Floor as RECORDER, we are searching for
a PhD student (f/m/d) in the area of paleoceanography/climatology to
conduct research related to the topic of “Pertubations in high CO2 worlds”.

The project aims to enhance our understanding of paleoclimatic and
paleoceanographic conditions during high-CO2 worlds during selected time
intervals in the Cenozoic. The research will contribute to the
understanding of sensitivities and tipping points through studies of
past perturbations and their effects. The project will investigate time
and timescale-dependent forcings and feedbacks between, for example,
temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations, while the climate system
undergoes pronounced carbon cycle feedbacks. Tasks will include sample
processing and measurements for established or new proxies on sediment
samples from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) that aid
our overall understanding of the response of the Earth System to
perturbations and the interaction with relevant feedback processes,
potentially collecting new material at sea.
