This is a distillation of a discussion I had in 2013 with Dave Jablsonski, David Sepkoski, Graham Buff,  and Doug Erwin on the topic:

  1.  concept of explosive or eruptive evolution as a general concept was around by the late 1940s into the early 1950s, including the Cambrian.
  2.  The Berkner and Marshall paper of 1965 uses the term 'Cambrian evolutionary explosion', Berkner, L. V., and L. C. Marshall. 1965. On the Origin and Rise of Oxygen Concentration in the Earth's Atmosphere. Journal of Atmospheric Sciences 22(3):225-261.
  3.  term "Cambrian explosion" appeared in Steve Stanley's papers on the cropping hypothesis (i.e. Stanley, S. (1974) Cropping and the Cambrian Explosion. New Scientist61, 131-134.
  4.  In the 80s, the term became widespread after papers by Runnegar and Brasier used it.
