A fully funded MSc by Research studentship to start in April 2021 (or on
award). This research project is part of the CAPOC project, initiated
by the NARG at the University of Manchester, in collaboration with the
University of Plymouth. The primary aim of the MPhil project will be to
establish and calibrate a high resolution biostratigraphic scheme for
the Scotian margin of the proto-Atlantic Ocean during Callovian to
Aptian times, within a sequence stratigraphic framework. This forms part
of a wide study that aims to develop an integrated and high resolution
biostratigraphic and isotopic proxy correlation for key intervals of the
Jurassic/Cretaceous across the Central Atlantic conjugate margin that
will evaluate changes in ocean circulation and climate in the central
Atlantic and Tethys through the middle Jurassic to early Cretaceous
interval.
The MPhil study will include:
1) the re-evaluation of published and unpublished data,
2) the sampling and study of new samples from DSSP/ODP and industrial
exploration wells,
3) the correlation with the reference section of Western Atlantic Morocco,
4) the integration of the new data to the sequence stratigraphy framework.
The micropaleontological part of the study will be focused on
nannofossils and to a lesser extent on calpionellids, ammonites and
planktic foraminifera.
The successful candidate is expected to have good undergraduate training
in micropalaeontology and biostratigraphy. Complementary training will
be provided by members of the NARG Biostratigraphy team in the course of
the MSc.
