Paleonet: Announcement: The Sofia Essay Prize - A New Paleontology-Earth Sciences Writing Competition

The Fundación Sierra Elvira announces the first "Sofía Essay Prize”, for 
students, post-docs and young researchers under 35 years old residing 
currently in Europe. This prize is annual, but will alternate topically, 
being awarded one year to a paleontology-related essay and the next to 
an earth sciences-related essay. However, as this is the first year the 
prize will be awarded, as an exception, this year essays on either topic 
will be considered for the award. Paleontology seems to have a dearth of 
topical essay competitions at the moment. Such competitions are an 
excellent way to encourage young paleontologists and identify talent at 
an early stage in a researcher's career. Therefore, I believe this is a 
very positive step forward for our field. Congratulations to the 
Fundación Sierra Elvira for organizing this initiative.
