Dear all,

This is a very sensitive topic, and is not easy to understand the reasons behind some postures like positive discrimination if you have not the background and data about how positive discrimination can change things in some cases. I have been myself in Cédric position, but reading on the topic (there are a lot of data and papers backing up the need of positive discrimination to change things) I have understood the need of having positive discrimination in many cases (despite I still think that it has pros and cons and has to be discussed and applied on individual offers, not like the magical solution to all the jobs). The "Scissor graph" that John shared is the same we have here in Spain, and there are multiple reasons to explain it, and more research is being done on it.

I hope you apologize me for using this opportunity to advertise the conference below, but I think that it is adequate, as this and other topics will be analysed, data presented, and solutions discussed. You are welcome (it is online and onsite) to join us, and it is appropiate to paleonet as a round table on decolonization of science is being organized (not on the conference webpage yet because some speakers still need confirmation), as well as a symposium on degrowing science. To change the system, apart from policies we will need a lot of dialogue and understanding.

The conference:

Bridges between disciplines: Gender in STEM and Social Sciences (https://bridges2022.com/) will be held in a hybrid format (online – and onsite in Gandía – Valencia, Spain) on September 12th-16th, 2022. The online event will be synchronous, meaning that it will take place at the same time as the on-site event. Both on-site and online presentations will be live-streamed.

Pre-registration and abstract submission are open: https://bridges2022.com/registration/

This conference aims not only to bridge the gap between what have been thought of as separate and decoupled fields of knowledge (STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics- and Social Sciences) but also to think about gender differences in science(s) from an intersectional perspective. BRIDGES 2022 aims to bring together STEM and Social Sciences through active dialogue and to make space to think about gender differences in science(s) from an intersectional perspective. We accept abstracts on the following topics:

-       Inequality in Science and Academia – mapping critical problems we need to deal with.

-       Reflections on the masculinist construction of science and knowledge.

-       Languages of Science – concepts and wording, dialogues, communication, and outreach.

-       Strategies and approaches for an emancipated and emancipatory Science: A Science for all.

-       Any field of research that incorporates gender explicitly in its investigations.

Do not hesitate to share this information with anyone that may be interested 

For further questions, please contact the organisation at communication at bridges2022.com

Best wishes

Sole

Unfortunately, you can't bring a knife to a gunfight. We have a dismal Higher Education situation here in Australia with female representation in the Natural and Physical Sciences at Associate Professor and Professorial levels (combined) at about 25% (with males at about 75%).

This graph from The Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) website (https://sciencegenderequity.org.au/about/gender-equity-in-higher-education/#tab-15051)

illustrates the situation:

The SAGE website also states that 'systemic barriers have a negative effect on the attraction, retention and progression of women in academic and research careers'. We don't seem to be very good at implementing the structural change needed to right this imbalance, despite having maternity leave and other measures.

Sometimes, it just seems like the only thing that can be done is to provide room at the table for underrepresented groups.  This is no different from the current US Supreme Court nomination - it's not that Uni Melbourne are discriminating against men, they are trying to seek balance for a group of people who clearly are as well qualified as the rest, but for historical and current reasons are being wrongly excluded.

Moreover, this is an appointment at the highest level in Australian academia - Level E Professor.  The appointment is not at the more introductory levels where there still seems to be parity among men and women in Australia (see graph).  But something negative is happening that women in Australian higher education are not breaking through to the higher academic levels.

I did not want to voice it over the entire mailing list at first - and initially expressed my owe to the sender -, but it is so appalling, unethical and philosophically naïve that I can hardly stay silent. You don't fight a history of patriarchy and a galaxy of discriminations by creating more discrimination. Because it is ethically wrong and because men aspiring to a scientific career from any social background should not be taken hostage of what some of their forefathers did.

If you want equity, then respect what this really means.

Cedric

There is an explanation in the qualification section of the attached brochure in the original email:

"The Faculty of Science and the School of Geography, Earth

to applicants who identify as women, in line with the special

measure provided for under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity

Act 2010 (Vic)."

I hope this helps!

Aspiring well-qualified woman,

How do you get away with a blatantly discriminatory deal like this...women only? I hope you find a well-qualified woman, since that is your wish, but good grief...this is the twenty-first century.
