Paleonet: Earth Science Women's Network Event - Demystifying the NERC Independent Research Fellowships: Interviews

My comment was that I supposed you were sending out a focused mailing list, and you needed to take my (male) name off the listing.  No big deal.  My first name is Clair, and I cannot tell you how many times people have made the assumption that I was a woman.  Goes with the territory if you have a name that could be either sex.
Not offended.  Just trying to help.

I dunno, if I had been named “Kevin” I might have become overly sensitive to and even triggered by people seeming to make assumptions about what I’m interested based on my first name.  I’m wincing just imagining the spam I could be getting about monster trucks and men’s rights. 😉  55 years of that and I’d have a kneejerk reaction before I realized it had gone to the entire list too, I’m sure.

I certainly don’t think this is “trouble” or that it merits sneering about anyone else’s career.

Thanks,
Anne

Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe Thanks for sending this Omar! I was considering how to respond to this person (he was also the one who made trouble last time) - and appreciate you saying something. I think it is taken more seriously when it comes from someone who is not a "young" woman.    It shouldn't be necessary for you to take this risk in sending this email, but thank you for doing so.      Best, Elizabeth   p.s. I looked the person up this morning and it seems like he's an emeritus "professor" who worked in oil for decades and then moved to teach geology at a community college in Texas, so he's also not "early career"...     -- Elizabeth C. Dear all,     This paleonet mailing list is for advertising info that may be of interest for the professional network in general. The Earth Science Women's Network Event is an event open to everyone, but even if it wasn't, there is a chance everyone in the list knows women who might be interested.    If an event/ad is not interesting for you, I would recommend just ignoring the email rather than spamming the mailing list with complaints.    To be honest, it is quite telling that we only receive spammy complaints from events that involve women in science and not the myriad of requests on obscure taxonomy or job ads; proof that these events are needed.    I'm sending this just to let know the organisers of ESWN that I - a self-identified man - am okay receiving emails from you and hope you keep using paleonet to advertise it.    Best wishes,  Omar (he/him)     On Mon, 26 Sep 2022, 11:38 Clair Ossian <clastic at verizon.net> wrote:
