Dear all

We invite you to submit an abstract to the North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC)<https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/napc2024/>, which will be held at the University of Michigan between 17-21 June 2024. In particular, we encourage you to submit to our session on the use of artificial intelligence and automation in paleontology (details below). If you have any questions about our session, please feel free send an email to allison.hsiang at geo.su.se<mailto:allison.hsiang at geo.su.se>.

The guidelines for abstract preparation and submission can be found here<https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/napc2024/prepare-and-submit-your-presentation-abstract/>, and the submission deadline is 11:59 PM EST, Saturday, 20 January, 2024. If you are interested in presenting something that doesn't fit any of the proposed symposia, please note that NAPC will also accept 'unaffiliated' presentations,

Thanks, and hope to see you in Ann Arbor!

Deep Learning in Deep Time: Applications of AI and Automation in Paleontology
Conveners: Allison Hsiang (Stockholm University), Daniela Schmidt (University of Bristol), Anieke Brombacher (Yale University), Congyu Yu (Chengdu University of Technology, American Museum of Natural History)

The application of recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and computational hardware/software to paleontology is a new and burgeoning field of study. These approaches facilitate the development of automated analysis of both visual and quantitative data on a vast scale, allowing researchers to generate and harness datasets containing hundreds of thousands to millions of specimens. This breakthrough increases the size of feasible datasets by several orders of magnitude. This session aims to showcase the current state-of-the-art in this field, demonstrating both what is currently possible and the pathways forward in this revolutionary, interdisciplinary domain. We expect this field to grow dramatically in the coming years and believe that a session targeting this topic is necessary to establish its presence at paleontological conferences and to facilitate a rapid transfer of skills and knowledge across the field.

On behalf of all conveners
