Apologies for cross-postings.
We invite applications to participate in a Conservation Paleobiology Network<https://conservationpaleorcn.org/> (CPN) Working Group that will develop pedagogies to foster core competencies for the next generation of conservation paleobiologists.
The developing field of conservation paleobiology (CPB) is only beginning to address how to train students. The Working Group will identify core competencies needed by CPB students and best pedagogical practices for fostering them. The work will culminate in an open-access, peer-reviewed journal article, co-authored by all participants. We will also develop and/or compile resources for use in training CPB students, such as model curricula, syllabi, reading lists, and examples of pedagogical tools (e.g., exercises, case studies, projects), to be made freely available on the CPN website.
A two-day in-person meeting will be held in March 2024 at the University of Florida. Participants will prepare for the meeting by completing "homework" assignments (readings, questionnaires) and with at least one virtual meeting. Additional virtual meetings will follow the workshop to complete the objectives of the Working Group. We anticipate meeting with the entire group ~monthly, and teams working on particular tasks may meet monthly or as needed to complete these products by spring 2025.
The Working Group will include 8 - 10 participants representing diverse career stages, specializations, types of institutions, and perspectives. Participants will be selected based on their interest, experience, and current activities related to the proposed work, particularly in the classroom and in training and/or mentoring students in CPB. Applications are encouraged from postdoctoral students and advanced graduate students who have experience in these areas.
Funding from the CPN covers participant support for the in-person meeting (lodging, travel expenses, meals, and incidentals). Participants must be employed at US institutions.
Prospective participants must complete an online application form available here<https://forms.gle/oQ2whNCQAw2NVLVC8> by January 15, 2024.
Please address any questions to the Working Group leaders, Patricia Kelley (kelleyp at uncw.edu<mailto:kelleyp at uncw.edu>) and Gregory Dietl (gpd3 at cornell.edu<mailto:gpd3 at cornell.edu>).
