Paleonet: New Positions & a Random Note

I've just posted three new positions to the PaleoNet web site, one in
the US and two in Sweden. If you haven't stopped by the "Positions
Listings" page in a while you might want to do that. Please feel free to
pass this information on to any qualified students or new PhDs looking
for a job in our field.

Perhaps it's just the summer but it seems (to me) there have been fewer
paleo job announcements being made lately. Given the economic issues and
general sense of uncertainty effecting many countries at the moment I
wonder if that's the reason, or, at least, a factor. Here in China we've
also seen a concerning general fall off in earth science graduate
student numbers that many suspect is associated with a diminished social
interest in viewing "non-green" energy and mineral exploration &
development careers as being desirable employment goals for many young
people. The "hot" field right now seems to be computer science; that is
if you exclude the aspiration of being a "social media influencer". Of
course, paleontology is much more than biostratigraphy. But as a field
largely housed in earth-science university departments fewer students
being interested in earth science in general might, inevitably mean
fewer students being interested in paleontology.

Any thoughts?

Norm MacLeod
