Dear PaleoNet Colleagues,

I recently learned of the passing on June 6 of Bob Brain and wanted to share an obituary that appeared in The Daily Maverick, a South African media and news website.

https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-08-renowned-south-african-palaeontologist-bob-brain-dies-at-92/

Bob's pioneering work is well known to anyone studying vertebrate taphonomy. His book, The Hunters or the Hunted? (1981) is still very influential; it is a classic in observational and experimental science combined with careful deductive reasoning. He was a huge inspiration in my career, paving the way for taphonomy to play important roles in paleoanthropology and paleontology as well as in many other fields. He also was one of the nicest, most curious and thoughtful humans I have ever met.

Please past this along to anyone you think might be interested. I also attach a pdf of the obituary.

Cheers,

Kay Behrensmeyer
