It is illegal in the United States for job interviewers to ask about one’s
family status, so I certainly wouldn’t answer questions along those lines
if I was presented with them. And, as a long time interviewer myself, I
NEVER went there.

Yes, that is serious stuff. None of it is anyone’s business but your own.
