Paleonet: Why "Carnets Geol." should change their economic plan and their editing policy?

Dear Paleoneters:

"Carnets Geol." http://paleopolis.rediris.es/cg/en-index.html was
founded in 2002, following the model of the late electronic "_Terra
Nova_" and that of _Palaeontologia Electronica_. It recently received a
1.4 score on Thomson Reuters' IF;

Our pages are hosted on a server of the RedIRIS (the Spanish Research
Council), an organization that also provides us a mailing list for our
subscribers (there is no cost attached to subscription as the journal is
a Platinum/Diamond Open Access!).

For a while, we benefited of the support of the INIST (a branch of the
French Research Council) through "e-revues", but it came to an end with
the shutdown of this portal in 2020. Today the SEPM is helping us with
the DOI registrations whereas the PalAss is still providing us a web
hosting facility with PHP and MySQL. Thanks to these tools the Open
Journal Systems (OJS) is running quite well allowing us to handle
submitted manuscripts up to publication.

Unfortunately, some weeks ago, there was an announcement of the "Server
End of Life" at Website Hosting | The Palaeontological Association
(palass.org) [1] [[note: we are affected, but we are not the only
ones]].

I have investigated to find a new hosting facility (with both PHP and My
SQL):

  	* there are offers for "Peer Review System" on the net. I found one at
$10/submission + $350 per year.
  	* an alternative would be a commercial web hosting ... for a cost of
about EUR100 per year (we could go for that one but we need to raise
some funds).

In both cases, we would need to change our economic plan ... and, for
instance, charge the authors for a minimal fee!

We have three alternative options left:

  	* crowdfunding: you are welcome to donate starting from EUR5 through
Donate to Carnets de Géologie (rediris.es) [2]
  	* looking for financial sponsoring. We would welcome donations from
the company or institution you are working in/with (contact me directly
at carnetsgeol at univ-brest.fr)
  	* looking for technical sponsoring. We would welcome a hosting
facility (with PHP and My SQL to run OJS) from the institution you are
working in/with (contact me directly at carnetsgeol at univ-brest.fr)

In these cases, we could keep on working as a Platinum/Diamond Open
Access, as a journal allowing immediate access to the content of the
journal without the payment of a subscription fee or licence. In
addition, authors pay no article publication charge. The above
sponsoring systems should cover all the costs of publication in the
journal.

I look forward to get your feedback.
