To all of Paleonet:
A colleague and yours truly are in the throes of writing a
biography for the late Ralph Bentley Stewart (1901-1958). Ralph received
his B.S. in geology from the University of Washington in 1923 and his PhD
in geology from Johns Hopkins University in 1928. Nearly everyone who has
worked on Tertiary mollusks of California is likely familiar with two major
papers he wrote on the type gastropod and the type bivalve material
described by W.M. Gabb ...
*Stewart, R.B. 1926 [1927]. Gabb's California type gastropods. *Proceedings
of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia* 78:287-447.
*Stewart, R.B. 1930. Gabb's California Cretaceous and Tertiary type
lamellibranchs. *Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia Special
Publication* 3:1-314.
One perplexing factoid however ... according to official documents from
Johns Hopkins University the title of Stewarts PhD dissertation was
slightly different from the published 1930 paper as follows ...
Stewart, R.B. 1928. Gabb's California and Tertiary type lamellibranchs.
Johns Hopkins University upub. PhD dissertation, 44 p.
*Does anyone out there have or have access to a copy of his
dissertation?* ANSP,
UCMP and USNM do not have copies. Presumably the library at Johns Hopkins
University has a copy but they haven't located it. I would like to verify
the title, pagination, and list of figures/plates.
Compiling a list of his publications, taxa he described, and finding
species named for Stewart has been easy ... but more "human interest"
information has been more difficult. We have already gleaned information
from *ancestry.com <http://ancestry.com>* so no need to check it again. ANY
information pertaining to Ralph B. Stewart is greatly appreciated.
Questions? Let me know.
Aloha,
Lindsey
