Dear Palaeo Community,

We regret to inform our fellow paleontologists about the death of Professor Stefan Bengtson on Saturday, 5th October. Stefan was born in 1947 in northern Sweden and undertook his early studies at Uppsala University. He was Professor of Palaeontology at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (since 1995), and before that had held a teaching position at Uppsala University. His main research interests were on the origin and early evolution of animals. He is perhaps best known for his work on Cambrian invertebrates, early metazoans, and Ediacaran embryos or embryo-like colonial organisms. Stefan had a large network of international collaborators and was always keen to apply new ideas and techniques to paleontological research. He published over 180 papers and book chapters. He was also heavily involved in editing paleontological books and journals (notably Lethaia, Fossils and Strata and Palaeontologia Electronica). He was elected as a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences in 2003. Stefan had been battling Parkinsons Disease for several years and succumbed to a heart attack in Rome where he was participating in a Swedish Royal Academy visit to the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. He gave his last research presentation in Rome and passed away doing what he loved most - discussing paleobiology with his peers. He will be greatly missed by the paleobiology community.
